Modelling: Maya or Blender

Alot of people say it's the designer/artist that delivers better and not the software. Although that's not completely wrong, it's  still somewhat  wrong. Look at it this way, no matter  how  good we get, we always want  something that makes the job Easier, quicker or more interesting.
Working with Maya or Blender, you can get the exact same results (if you're  that good)  but you can also get the exact same results if you're  that bad.

Alright, time to differentiate them.

Appearance

With the default view Maya offers a larger workspace than blender accompanied by a more professional  look (as you would expect, since Maya is more corporate and owned by Autodesk).
Maya's workspace.
However blender allows it's  users completely  modify the looks (by completely I mean change the colours of everything to suit the user). But it's  not particularly as easy as It sounds since there are so many different things that can be changed.
Blender.
Even though theRe are a lot of people complaining about maya's UI,  we all have to accept that there two softwares have crappy UIs but it depends on what you like.

Verdict Maya wins

Functionality

There's  not much to say here. It's  a well known fact that Maya has more features than almost if not all other graphics design softwares. Maya renders a lot better than blender (that takes a huge point) but it is believed that blender renders faster(expected). That said there are still places where blender beats Maya. For example: sculpting, Editing. Even though Maya has a little  bit more features, this is still a narrow win.

Verdict Maya wins

Weight

Maya is like a spoilt fat kid. Always eating what it can, when it can and autodesk (as the irresponsible parent)  don't give a damn how heavy their kid gets. On the other hand blender is unbelievably light. Blender is like that ballet dancer who's  parents are ballet dancers with gymnasts do parents. Blender is so light you can afford  to delete it and reinstall it 3 minutes before  your project's deadline (you really shouldn't do that).

Verdict Blender wins

Price

Before I say anything about this. It's  worth knowing that blender wins this round BECAUSE THEY'RE BATMAN!
Blender is totally free Maya costs over $3000.

Verdict Blender wins

Stability

As every developer knows. There really isn't anything like a stable software associated with developing. Some are just more reliable  than others and all the software hate you. They wait for you to stop saving so they can mess you up. It's  so sad that even with all the money you pay for Maya, it's  still as unstable  as it is. I guess that's  the price they pay for their over the top features. Blender isn't trustworthy either but it's  more reliable than Maya.

Verdict: Blender wins

Convenience

This really depends on what you prefer. With Maya you get the work done with your mouse almost completely but with blender, you need  those fingers.  Blender  runs on the hotkeys principle. But with that said there's one little thing that blender does and it puts the 'D' in difference. With blender the LMB is used to translate objects while RMB is used to select components of a material.  And this makes it slot more convenient than Maya since Maya uses the LMB for whatever selection you hope to make. Blender also has the superior edit mode and render process (as it simplifies rendering) unlike Maya's rendering process which can discourage you if you're new at it.

Verdict: Blender wins

The verdict

Even though blender has been the underdog it's  whole life,  it squares up pretty well with Maya. In the end it really comes down to what you prefer. But I'd say you
should try them both and see what you  prefer. Autodesk allows you to taste the flavour before you  buy with their free trial so you might  want to get that and see if you like.
